Although in practice pronounced "GO-tee" or "GO-tie", it is actually an "acceptable" spelling of "fish" attributed to George Bernard Shaw. He is reputed to have said that the spellings of various sounds in the english language was so many and varied that a perfectly acceptable spelling of "fish" would be "ghoti". "gh" = "f" as in "rough", "o" = "i" as in "women" and "ti" = "sh" as in "motion".
