1. Most important is interchangeability. Measurement allows the products we use every day to be produced on a massive scale, which means the average person can afford luxury goods. Interchangeability really started with Eli Whitney, when President Jackson made the first order for completely interchangeable firearms. A master gage was decided on, and that was used as the template for all other parts. But length standardization had not yet been implemented in a broad way, which is next.

2. Standardization. Closely related, but not the same as interchangeability. You have to be able to measure very accurately in order to agree on a set of standards to enable broader interchangeability - how do you know everyone is using the same unit of measurement when they say "inch" or "meter?" Being able to measure different standards of length is another foundation of modern engineering.

3. Science. Measurement allows repeatable and verifiable experiments, and more importantly, quantified experimentation for the improvement of human knowledge.

4. Safety. Measurement allows engineers to produce designs that are within known saftey limits under certain conditions.

5. Cost. Known measurements permit the minimum of materials to be used in a given design, reducing cost.
