What happens to the backlog of post which is affected with the postal strike? Does it get posted eventually or do they throw it away?!

It gets posted eventually. They are not allowed to throw post away - its against the law.

I haven't really noticed any strikes, I can't imagine there is that much - the prats at the royal mail are only giving themselves more work to do!
