It is indeed like the other answerers here state.
If you have personal ingormation of yourself, somewhere on the internet. it i theoreticly possible that someone gains access to it. Especually the larger environments like myspace but allso lots of others are nice targets to this.
I would keep sensitive personal information as much to myself as possible and not trust the social sites to keep your info safe. even in general they would be safe . it happens too much that inofrmation is snatched, not only from directly hacking the website itself but allso by social engineering and evesdropping while your in public areas accessing the net.

Wow this could be a book if everyone provided insight as to "how". The how will vary along with the why. Why certain networks are hacked on purpose. Most obviously is to gain information or to destroy information. I will talk about one reason. Main reason I have seen is to gain access to our servers so that they can host porn off our server while using our broadband connection. Servers to store porn is expensive along with the bandwidth required so what they do is create a virus that opens a port. once that virus gets in it reports back to originator it's ip and port. in doing so it can use an array of clients to connect to this port and transfer files. Now whenever someone visits there website it will redirect to servers all over that have been hacked. That is the most common reason we have seen trying to get into ours, but just about every port is locked down so no need to worry, but home users they are the easiest targest. I always make sure to lock every port except for 80 on my families firewalls and when they can't do something I open just that port. Viruses can be created with a number of developing languages. So they could be just about anything. To learn more about this do a search on how to create a virus. I've made some with C++ not sure if that is the most common but if you do a search on how to create a virus with C++ that could give you some insight on the how it is done. I as a network admin try to read articles about how they are created all the time and it isn't so that I know how to make them it is so that I know what to look for the symptoms the problems they can cause.

Hackers can gain personal information even if the file is encrypted. Two months ago hackers infiltrated Microsofts home page and placed a picture of a boy with an ak47 in Iraq on the page

ANYTHING can be hacked. With security in place it will slow down the ability for a hacker to get at the information that he is trying to steal but given enough time he will eventually get it.

But having said that you need to ask yourself is the data that the hacker is after worth all the effort that it is going to take to get it. In other words is it going to be worth the hackers effort to spend days or weeks to crack your password so that he can gain access to your Myspace data? Probably not. But if it was your financial information that they were after, that could be a different story.

Hope this helps,

All of the answers so far are right on the money with the exception.
Don't think for one miute that your every keystroke can not be followed and watched, because it can.
There is No real security, accept through certian VPN's that are encrypted using Gov encryption, This means you must have the correct key encryption to access there site as well as your own for them to recognise that you are who you say you are. this incryption is several hundred charcters long.

Check the source list below and have a look around you will see what I say is a fact.

I fix computers everyday, and even I've been hacked - with lots of protection. Strange eh?

So don't trust any of them, and keep your personal details just that way....you never know what some crazy will do with it.

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime, remember?

it looks like anybody can hack into your personal details on the computer even with security on it, so i would advise you not to put any personal details on
