Let x = number of cows
Let y = number ofturkeys
Cows have 4 legs, turkeys have 2 legs
Total legs = 96
So 4x + 2y = 96
x + y =28
So x = 28 - y
Using substitution
4(28 - y) + 2y = 96
So 112 - 4y + 2y = 96
So 112 - 2y = 96
So 112 - 96 = 2y
So 16 = 2y
So y = 8
Thus you have 8 turkeys which leaves the other 20 animals as cows

4x + 2y = 96
x + y = 28
4x + 2y = 96
-2x - 2y = -56
2x = 40
x = 20
20 + y = 28
y = 8
so 20 cows and 8 turkeys
