sorry, but you were very wrong informed
you can't keep male/female together, unless you spawn them, other then that they will kill each other
you also can't keep male/male together
What you CAN do is keeping females together, of at least 3 in a 10 gallon tank, they will choose the so called peckingorder which looks like they're fighting, but as soon they are settled they are going to be fine
Hope that helps
Good luck

Male bettas must NOT be kept with any other betta, male or female. Too many people are under the false impression that they will get along. They MAY get along in the short-term, but sooner or later, instinct is going to kick in and they will rip each other apart. I have never heard of this set-up lasting longer than a month before they start fighting.
Males and females should only ever be placed in the same tank after both bettas have been conditioned for spawning, and even then, they should only be placed together for a short time until the spawning has taken place, after which they must be separated again.
Female bettas are often aggressive, and like their male counterparts, they will fight other bettas regardless of gender. The only way to keep female bettas peacefully is if you have them in a group of at least 3, in about 7 gallons of water or up. When they are in a large group, they will establish a pecking order amongst themselves with a "dominant female", and then they will live fairly peacefully most of the time. However, this does not apply to males.
I recommend you get another tank for the male betta, about 10 liters will do. They should be kept separately at all times.

IMPORTANT BETTA FISH CARE: Only ONE betta per bowl! They're called "fighting fish" for a reason. They are highly territorial animals and will react violently if two are placed in the same container. You can see the preliminary phase of their fighting, the threat display, if you put a mirror up against the bowl. Notice the raised gill covers, which makes the betta look bigger.
Betta Fish Care: Compatibility.
You can add an African Dwarf Frog, but it will need to eat live food such as live Black Worms at least three times a week.
Q: Why can't boys be kept with boys?
A: Male bettas are very aggressive toward their territory. They aren't mean, that's just the way they are. But, that does not mean that they can't be less aggressive than other bettas. Some bettas are calm and mellow. Other are EVIL!!! Some people think that bettas are that way because they are kept in small spaces and get all freaked out. But, I don't know.
Q: Can I keep two girls together?
A: Well, I've heard of people doing that, but I've also heard that can be aggressive too, some even make bubblenests! But, if you've done this before, then keep going!

thats why they are suppose to seperate unless breeding.
They will do this, yes you can have them be ok together, but that is only because your male was very mild.
Your female mistook this for lack of experience whenshe wanted to breed.
Females can and will attack and even kill males. It isnt all that uncommon.
If your new, i dont know how much reearch you did, why would you have them together anyway. males and females should be housed together for that reason.
If you were tryin beed, if you only had them for a week, it wasnt enough time to condition, so the female got tired of an inexperienced male.
again it does happen but this i hate to say was a error on your part. they dont usually tolerate eachother in the same tank other than breeding.
If you were trying to prove people wrong witha pair together, well you see the results. People alway try to have males and females together....trust me they do.... always looking to set their bettas apart and say they are a peace pair.
But things like this do happen.

The only time you want to put two Bettas in a tank together is when you are positive that they are ready to mate. This is based on when the male is ready and not the female. You'll know when he is ready to mate because he will build what is called a "bubble nest" usually at the top of the tank. It is then safe to put the female in the tank.

bettas are quirky and females usually dominate the males -- so whats happening is probably she doesn't want to breed with him so his amorous advances are being met with attacks.
the guy at the pet store misinformed you. they don't get along well together at all in small areas. bettas mating habits require a large amount of space that can be forced into smaller spaces with lots of care. typically they meet and run, meet and run until the female is ready to lay eggs and the male has a nest ready. then they mate and the female takes off leaving the male with the nest and eggs. when they have no place to run it gets violent.

In 50 liters (13 US Gallons) i'd choose for a number of the Dwarf species of Corys like Pygmy OR Panda. keep a minimum of four-5 by using fact they do shoal. despite if technically you will desire to ruin out with extra fish, i'd propose against it. In my adventure Bettas desire to have the dazzling - mid area style of empty and to themselves in basic terms. Tanks that are stocked properly in specific situations would experience too stuffy to a Betta by using fact of too plenty interest, particularly from lively shoalers. additionally, Bettas do appropriate with vulnerable filters by using fact they convey much less of a present day interior the tank. vulnerable filters additionally mean you're extremely constrained on the tank friends you will desire to get regardless of the tank length. you do no longer opt for to pass stuffing it with fish to the brim. Dividing the tank in 2 and preserving 2 Bettas can artwork. Edit --> Wow, for somebody who labored at a puppy keep Roscoe somewhat is familiar with no longer something. Bettas are severe end tropical fish and opt for a heater. Corys additionally opt for a heated tank as they're tropical. No tank opt for an air bubbler if filtered genuine by using fact the filter out would aerate the tank! additionally, Gouramis and Bettas are the WORST mixture ever. you are able to not abode Bettas with different labyrinth fish - they are going to easily approximately constantly attack them.
