I nice, compact digital camera and a few extra memory cards. That way he can take tons of pictures and share his memories.

A blank journal so he can keep track of his journey. You might write a note on the first page wishing him a safe journey. Maybe even slip in a picture. He'll see it everyday when he opens the book to write and he'll have a great keepsake from his trip.
