Nothing new in this, Dave. It's xenophobia, pure and simple.
The British can do no wrong, and everything that happens is the other guy's fault.
You may not remember the last time a couple of middle class Brits got pilloried for leaving their young children alone when they were on holiday. I remember it because I used to vacation regularly in Florida. Jill and Philip Adam left their children, 1 and 5, in a hotel room while they went out for a couple of hours. They claimed they checked every 30 minutes; when the police were called and arrived, the police claim they waited 90 minutes for the parents to return to the room. So whose side did the British press take? The Adams'. The Adams claimed that leaving their children in this way is "normal" in Britain; British expats living in Florida raised an eyebrow. Whose side did the British press take? The Adams'. The Adams were arrested (their offence being a Class B Felony in the U.S.). The Adams claimed they did nothing wrong; the police and local prosecutors pointed out what they did was against the law (and who knows the local law better than those who enforce it). Whose side did the British press take? The Adams'. To avoid prosecution, the Adams turned the affair into an international incident. They lobbied their MP back home and turned the episode into a campaign against the state of Florida, saying Florida is not child-friendly. Despite the fact most if not all of us who have been there know that Florida is one of the most child-friendly destinations on the planet, whose side did the British press take? The Adams'!
Whenever a Briton gets busted for smuggling drugs, beating up rival football club supporters or committing even more serious offenses abroad, in the minds of the British press it's never the Briton's fault - it's the local population and especially police in the host country who are the bad guys.
I find this insulting to those of us who do not commit crimes when we are abroad. It's as if the British press is saying we are all so stupid as to not know when we are committing a crime. Whether it be child neglect, causing a public disturbance or felony drug possession. It's no bloody wonder in survey after survey, the British are described as the most badly behaved and uncouth tourists on Earth.

it is NOT only on here that people loathe or mistrust the McCanns.
At a break at work, I asked the rest of the staff what they thought of the McCanns and they all agreed that there is something fishy going on and that he has a sneaky look about him.
Most of the things chatted on about them on here they mentioned.
the neglect, the money, the tours, the blog, the happy faces they have, the little time they spend with their twins....i could go on.
and belive me i dont work with people who agree with each other for peace sake..we all have some lively debates, but on this subject it was 100% on being sus about those two.

She is unbelievably flippant about the whole thing. Dave S you should read this link to the Daily Mirror about the smell of a corpse being detected at the McCanns apartment. See below:

Kate and Gerry need to understand that The Media will not accept these facts the way their friends would. If they want the Media attention they must expect the backlash as well. The reason they want this attention is because it helps Madeleine ,lets remember that MADELEINE.

Isn't this a free country? So why does the Daily Express feel it is under pressure to print uncritical stories.
But there actually is little new news, just conjecture and rehashing the same story over and over again, while the journalists scurry around looking for new twists.

I have wondered all along if there is a 'D' notice on any adverse reports on the McCanns and I have also wondered why.
