Heh heh. Lot of answers here. Which one you gonna believe? Truth is, the narrow blade is supposed to be the ungrounded (hot) conductor and the wide blade is the neutral. Some day some poor shmuck is going to kill himself or burn his house down using the answers on here.

USUALLY, I say USUALLY it is the narrow one. Problem is that you cannot depend on it. Sometimes the careless or unknowing installer switches them. Don't take a chance that the one you are working with is correctly done. The cheapest voltmeter will tell you. Even though you know which is which, turn off the power and look again for voltage before doing any work on the circuit.

The narrow blade is connected to a hot phase and the wide blade is connected to the neutral.

both are required to complete the circuit. The wider blade is generally on the supply side with the narrow one being the return.

By code, the narrow plug is intended to be hot, the wide plug is neutral return. On a flat cord the hot lead will have a ribbed edge or other color marking to indicate which side is hot. If you are installing a roller switch, break the hot side. If you are replacing a cord end, put the ribbed or color-coded side on the wide plug.

On my home, the polarity is reversed, so the only way to tell accurately is by using a test meter.
