Don't, by any means, try to believe for one second that your friends may want a choice in the matter.
That makes things entirely too easy.

I usually do this for both of the reasons you mentioned. I think that if a person feels that they are infuriated the only way to deal with it is to push the person away. But I also have a habit of doing the opposite as well and that is pushing people away when they are trying to care.

Actually for both reasons... I push toxic people away, because life is too short for me to be hurt...
I push toxic people away because, I'll hold it in for a long while, but when I lose my temper, I say terrible things (in a clam and polite manner, of course...)so I won't hurt them...

i'm no longer afraid of getting hurt, and i don't hurt anyone on purpose... so when i push others away, it's only because we don't click... and that happenes before any form of friendship is formed... i rarely push a family member or a friend away...! lol

It's because I don't want them to be hurt.
My principle is let me hurt myself and be full of regrets rather than have them feel that way.

it depends on what ur pushing them away 4...if ur pushing away because u will cheat, then thats benifitting them, even tho they may not see it that way. but just for no reason, its nots as beneficial to them, itll seem like its for ur own personal pleasure.

I've done it for both reasons already.
But many people use to say it's for other's sake, while it actually is for their own sake.
