ok, but equally, how could you know it's not expanding?
in general relativity space (or rather spacetime) bends and stretches anyway - gravity is a warping of spacetime. no physical principle forbids space from expanding, and there is evidence also that this is what's happening - distant galaxies are moving away, the further away they are the faster they seem to be going. some of them are moving away faster than light, which relativity does forbid. it makes a lot more sense then to suppose that they are not moving through space, instead space is expanding.

(iii) The expansion of the universe
According to the Holy Quran:
“And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.” (51:47)
The word “heaven”, as stated in this verse, is used in various places with the meaning of space and universe. Here again, the word is used with this meaning.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian physicist Alexander Friedmann and the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaitre theoretically calculated that the universe is in constant motion and that it is expanding.
From the moment of the Big Bang, the universe has been constantly expanding at a great speed. Scientists compare the expanding universe to the surface of a balloon that is inflated. Observing the sky in 1929 with a telescope also proved this fact. Edwin Hubble, the American astronomer, discovered that the stars and galaxies were constantly moving away from each other. These observations tell us that when everything in the universe moves away from each other, it is considered to be a constantly expanding universe. This fact was revealed in the Quran when no one knew about the expansion of the universe 1,400 years ago. This is because the Quran is the word of Allah, the Creator and the Ruler of the entire universe.

Space is not a thing. It's where things are. Think of space as a room, which is getting bigger and bigger. We can measure thisd from the "redshift" as things move away. THe space aroudn us is hled in by gravity, so it does not expand. The space between galaxies does.
As for not being able to see or touch it- you can't see our touch air, but a cloud of air can expand.

Space can be detected by the presence of matter and electro-magnetic radiation.
Space is a quantum entity of minimum size it can't be reduced or expanded.
Space can have a density that ranges from maximum to zero.
As space expands it's density is reduced and when it reaches the minimum density it will go out of existence.

the objects in the universe are all moving about and some are moving ever further from the centre thus making the universe larger. the dark matter between the planets, stars, asteroids, moons etc comprises of absolutely nothing. that makes the universe expanding but in my view space can only be infinate as it is nothing.

Because. It has the physical capabilities to put something IN that space. So that then you can touch it. It's expanding the capability.
That's my theory anyway.

Space is the word given to the Universe,,distant objects can be measured with instruments detecting light variations and spectrum analysis with shifts in blue and red light....The universe gives off a background sound of dark matter that is believed to be the residual left overs of the Big Bang theory. But as time and science progress our understanding of the complexities of this question are being answered...You will get more detailed answers for your question and I hope they full y answer your queries

space is simply the gap between objects thus as they move apart the distance between them becomes greater and thus there is more space however space isn't really anything i.e its made of nothing
