Fill the 9L container(Can), pour it in the 4L can, discard this 4 L from the 4L Can.
Left with 5L in 9L, again pour this in 4L Can, discard this 4L from 4L can.
Now you will be left with 1L in 9L Can, pour this in 4L Can, 9L can is now empty and 4L Can has 1 L in it. Fill (full) 9L can and pour it to 4L can (which has already 1L), so only 3L goes from the 9L can and remaining is 6L in 9L can.
Carry from river as you like it, as you have measured accurately 6L. :-))

Assuming that the containers are transparent or at least translucent, and have the same internal diameter...

Fill the 9L container. Decant 4L into the 4L container and discard. Decant another 4L into the 4L container and discard. You're left with 1L in the 9L container. Put the two containers side by side and fill the 4L container until the water level is the same as the 9L container. Now you have 1L each in both containers. Decant the 1L from the 4L container into the 9L container. Now you have 2L in the 9L container. Fill the 4L container. You have a total of 6L.

Well you fill the 9L container with 4L of water from the 4L container. Then you fill the 4L container with 2L of water and through it in the 9L container to make it 6L. That is if your containers have markings on it to show you how much water you through in.

fill the 9L, empty it into the 4L then empty the 4L. you now have 5L in the 9L container. empty it into the 4L again so you have 1L in the 9L container. empty the 4L again then put the 1L into the 4L container. fill the 9L again, then empty it into the 4L container until it's full, this takes 3L from the 9L container so then you have 6L in the 9L container as required.

I don't exactly get the question. But if it's one trip. Fill the 4 litter half way so that is two liters. Pour it into the 9. Fill it halfway again. That's another 2. Put that into the nine which is four. Now fill the 4 halfway again. and pour it into the nine. That's six.

Or. After the first halfway. You could just pour in the whole four liters.

OR you could fill the nine litter container 2/3 full
