Not completely true, but partially is. I've seen a lot of old Egyptian women not wearing black. They tend to wear black mostly in the villages where u will see women wearing a black abaya and a black scarf. If ur talking abt women in their late 50s or 60s then it is possible, as they see it as more "waqar" for them and their old age if u know what it means. Some Egyptian women also tend to wear black for the rest of their lives if they're widows as a way of being faithful to their late husbands, although forbidden in Islam to do so, some still do it.
Other than that, there are some religious women, young and old, who like to wear only black or dark colors when going out as not to attract attention to themselves or their clothing and they believe that is what women in prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to dress like.
I hope u have a clear picture of this now...

My grand grand mother used to wear black all the time. she died at 82, 15 years ago.

anyway to answer your question. I belive it was (may still in many places) the tradition that a widow should wears black after her husband dies and for the rest of her life. but thats not the case in modern society. it is not only the husband in some areas, also the father, the brother,..etc.

thats why you only see very old women doing it, and some times a little bit younger women ( I am talking 50s and up).

Because most of Egyptian women 70+ yrs are widowed so they wear black as a sort of mourning for their dead husbands.

Maybe because black is a kind of color were a person cant really see through and they were that color alot so a guy cannot look at a girl like a piece of object.. instead they should look at her like a human

I noticed this when I was in Egypt and also wondered why. It probably gets hella hot underneath all that black, especially in the summertime.

If widows do this, why do they do it? Wouldn't they wanna re-marry and not be lonely anymore?

Black can be sexy, especially if it is a low cut dress. On the other hand it can be a dress of mourning.

In the city they wear balck if they are mourning. In the countryside they do because it is a tradition out of modesty.

Hello, my wife is certainly not a widow. at 26...not yet anyways. She wears alllll black and the niquab (face veil) Observant muslim women tend to prefer black, dark brown, or dark blue, over bright colors. This is so they dont draw attention to their dress, which then draws attention to their figure....No makeup, no colors, no fingernail polish, black shoes, etc etc. At home though anything goes.....and its not a matter of control...my wife is college educated, from upper middle class family, etc etc. Its all about the religion.
