Because years ago the was the old world (Europe) and the New World (the Western Hemisphere)

* First World are democratic countries (not used much any longer)
* Second World are communist countries and those in the influence of the Soviet Union (not used much any longer)
* Third World are those countries who are developing and don't have a well defined political or economic condition. (still in use)
* Fourth World are also known as "Least Developed Countries". These are the poorest countries on Earth with many in Africa. The only one in the west is Haiti.
The terms were developed after WWII to divide the world into political and economic categories.

Europe was the first world. The Americas were the "new" world. Southeast Asia is the latest to be "blessed" with "civilization" so these countries are referred to as "third world". Kind of arrogant, isn't it?

Its like a ranking system, 1st world refers to the developed countries ( in other words rich & better), & 3rd is the developing, poor, can't find running water or sewage, countries.
