As soon as the 1950s were over, when US voters were a homogenous crowd of white middle class folks, polls became irrelevant.

The polls sample too few people to make any sense in a culture as diverse and unpredictable as this one. The media today uses polls as a cheap, convenient crutch to lean on, with loaded questions, skewed samples, and no relevancy to any of it.

As long as they can make it sound good, though, they'll keep doing it.

No, because it is too early for the voters to have a mind. They are just saying the names they have heard so far. The NY TIMES just had a poll and did not believe the results because it did not meet what they thought should have been the results, so they did the poll again and got the same results. Wonder how many polls are taken that we do not hear about?

now surveys are a million dollar industry. so the surveys are remodelled to meet the expectations of the person / organisation ordering it. some of them which do not affect anyone are quite close.

though i have heard of even a simple poll like how many times do u have sex, being spooked to make it more juicy by a magazine.
