Carlsbad caverns is in New Mexico, it takes about 2 hours if you want to walk through the whole thing down to the big room or 45 minutes if you just want to see the big room which you can reach to by an elevator. Really cool place to visit!

First of all, you may have confused Carlsbad, California near San Diego with Carlsbad, New Mexico where the Carlsbad Caverns are located. That being said, the time needed to see the caverns is about 3 hours and well worth it! It is a cool place with lots to experience and even has a cafeteria underground in one of the caves. The only public transportation to the Carlsbad Cavern area is via TNM&O Coaches from El Paso, TX or Albuquerque. Good Luck!

Carlsbad Caverns is no where near San Diego. It's not even in California. It's in New Mexico. Ask this question elsewhere!

Ask your question in New Mexico, no caverns in Carlsbad. You are not the only one who thinks they are in Carlsbad. Just down the highway is Encinitas, so many tourists are astounded because they always thought Encinitas was in Mexico, guess they get it confused with Ensenada Mexico.
