does it mean that you can push?

i am only 33 weeks but i am already 42.5% effaced (i would say 50% as the sonographer said my cervix has thinned to 1.5cm when it is supposed to be 3cm - also my baby has dropped)

Effaced means the cervix is thinning. When it is effaced 100% it can start to dilate or open. When it is all the way open, then you will feel the urge to push.

Dropped is measured in "station" Station 0 is "engaged" and station -3 is crowning.

I sat at 100% effaced, 4 cm dilated and station -1 for about a month before I went into labor.

I bet you have some time left to prepare - but start packing your bag!

EDIT: Don't be scared by the comment above. I had no pain until I dilated fully in 1 hr. That hurt like none other. But I never felt going 0 - 5.

They have no relation to eachother... you can be completely effaced and not dilated at all or you could be dilated a few cm but still not be effaced. Dilation is the opening of the cervix, effacement is the thinning of it. Think of the cervix as a cylinder... the pressure of the baby's head pushes down on that making it flat like a pancake.. that is effacement. When it starts opening is dilation. Usually they will happen simultaneously but not always.

Effacement is the process by which the cervix prepares for delivery. After the baby has engaged in the pelvis, it gradually drops closer to the cervix; the cervix gradually softens, shortens and becomes thinner. You may hear phrases like "ripens," or "cervical thinning" which refer to effacement.

Effacement is measured in percentages. For example, your health care provider may tell you that you are effaced 50%, which means you are half way to being completely effaced. When you are 100% effaced or completely effaced, your cervix is paper-thin and labor is right around the corner.

In your final weeks of pregnancy your health care provider will routinely check for effacement, and as soon as you arrive at your birth location, you will be checked for effacement. If you are a first time mom, your cervix will usually efface before it dilates. If you are a second time mom, your cervix will usually dilate before effacement.

I hope you're in the hospital when that happens. 100% effaced means your cervix has completely thined, and depending on how much you are dilated, you say 1.5cm?, and if your baby has dropped, you are in good shape. You need to be dilated to 10cm, completely effaced, and your water broken before you can start pushing. With or without medication, you will know when it's time to push.

Effaced simply means the cervix has THINNED, NOT opened. Your baby has dropped, which probably means you are getting closer to labor, but DO NOT PUSH!!! You should not push AT ALL until you are 10cm DILATED.

No... you can't push when you 100% effaced.... you have to be dialated to a 10 first... when i had my second I was 90% effaced, and dialated to a 3 when I went in TO BE INDUCED... you will be in the WORSE pain of your life before you are even dialated to a 5... you still have a long time! trust me!
