Please list good and bad things about this. Also, can you replace a roof like this with something else?

cedar shakes can still be bought,they rely on tar paper underneath to be waterproof and leaks are pretty hard to find,they require the same plywood underneath as other roof products however so yes you can replace them,they are very expensive too

use asphalt shingles, they are expensive enough. Just go ahead and buy the best. In the long run you will be glad you spent the extra dollars. The roof is really important. And see if you can find a roofer who can install them with the drip line running straight up the roof. One other thing spend the extra money for a real drip edge flashing. It should not be the flat cheap one that most roofers use. It will save your fascia board so that the water sheds off the roof properly. Also make sure they install the shingles with nails, not staples. A roof is something you dont want to have to replace very often.

People like shake roofing for the look. It is also suppose to provide better air flow to the house. They are expensive to replace. You can replace them with shingles or tile.

No insurance companies and I don't know of any States that these roofs are legal in, anymore. I don't think you can buy ceder shingles for roofing, you can for various "hobbies" and I got them for repairs but, couldn't for roofs. I had to hew my own for a repair job.

It has to be treated with fire retardent pretty often. I don't remember how often though. Been a while since we had a shake roof.

They will burn really fast if your house catches on fire.
The clay roofing material - will discolor and crack in a fire.
The best material to use is the normal roofing stuff.
