Dictatorships can act even if it hurts their wards. The Taliban nearly eliminated poppy production and allowed the farmers to starve. After the US and allies defeated the Taliban and an elective government was emplaced, the Afghan government could not hope to stay in power without allowing the farmers and their local chiefs to profit from opium crops.

We must remember that we are talking about a 'people' that are
about 700 years behind the rest of us(including other muslim
entities) and they can do little else with their lives as their book won't "allow" them a place in a MODERN world.Since they do not have any GNP,the only way they can support their terrorist brethren and warlords is opium sales and to keep some semblance of order GWB is looking the other way.

Who cares, those people in Afghanistan need to make money somehow and opium production is one of the very few ways to make money in that country. I'm not concerned about it.
