It's not stated in the Constitution that you must have an education either. I see you have exercised that right.

The government cannot force you to support people on welfare. You are free to live the life you choose. If you are sick of working and paying taxes, then I suggest you stop doing that. If you think the grass is that much greener in the welfare recipients lawn, then join them. Smoke cigarettes and drink beer, every day can be a Sunday for you.
Welfare is designed to be a safety net, but it is a system that people can and do take advantage of. In spite of that am glad that it is there. I don't need to see children suffering for their parent(s) indiscretions. I don't need to see good people who have fended for themselves in the streets because illness forced them out of their homes. You may feel that you are strong enough to always fend for yourself, but you are a fool if you think that fate can't strip you of everything you have ever worked for. Be thankful for the things you have and take some comfort in knowing that if you should ever need it, there are social services that can help you when you need it the most.

Well, if you study politics you will find that the Constitution is the basis of our government. Anything not in the Constitution and not forbidden by it is within the jurisdiction of the states.
So party on welfare people.
Also, realize that this country spends more on white collar, corporate welfare than it does on trailer-dwelling, no-collar welfare.
And then you might consider the Declaration of Independence; the ideal that fomented a revolution was "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
For people struggling to survive, the "life" part might mean some money to pay rent or buy necessities.
If you don't know, this world ain't fair--the founders new that, accounted for that, and still upheld their ideals.
You don't owe any individual anything (you do owe the country tax $ AND THERE IS AN AMENDMENT IN THE CONSTITUTION FOR THAT). Your frustration at having to pay taxes--well, anyone can identify with that on some level. But shouldn't you be more outraged at no-bid Haliburton contracts? Sweetheart deals? Rampant corruption and corporate cronyism? Welfare corruption is way down on the list of beefs for any rational American.
PS for the morons who can't figure out what Jefferson was saying when he wrote in the Constitution that: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion": what he meant by that is clear if you do ten minutes of research and make any effort to understand the man and his ideals. He meant hands off my country religious coo-coos.
Racist, ignorant America hears what it wants to hear, reads what it wants to read. This is the greatest country in the world, built on Enlightenment ideals, yet we seem to use our freedom to suck--ironic.

Before you ask such a question....maybe you should study economics.....did you know 100% employment is potentialy the most destructive event ...the closer you get to it the more volatile the situation.
Further more...foodstamps as crime prevention...even at its worst manifestation its a payoff to losers that works...much cheaper and more effective than any other program...
I have a few questions for you...are you healthy...mind and body?
What kind of support system do you have now and what kind did you have growing up?
What do you do for a living now?
Have you been to college? Who paid for it? What race are you?
So...when a single mother comes home from work to take care of very sick child (cancer, leukemia, heart disease....)? Should we leave them to it on thier own?
Do you know that the welfare system actually provides stability to the market? Do you know what studies show of nations that have no such service on thier ability to take skilled workers from job to job when events beyond thier control cause them to lose a job?
U.S. government pushes agendas that promote spending over saving....and other tactics that slow and small the building of a personel saftey net...they do so because its what has been found to best benefiet all...with that in mind...should not this same economic system not be obligated to help provide resource systems for those who have cooperated with such a system?
.....Actually do some research on something before you take such a strong stance.....

Oh! for Pete's sake! I am so tired of hearing this stuff....Most people on any kind of welfare REALLY need it and do not cheat! There are limits on how long they can receive it, and then they have to find work! (Even mothers of very young children who NEED their mothers at home!)
The ("g-d piece of paper": GWBush) Constitution gives you the right to vote for legislators. These people make the laws. If there is a question of "legality", cases can be filed in courts--all the way to the Supreme Court--to "test" the laws. If you don't like it, talk to your Senators and Representatives!!

I am happy to hear that you do enough work to buy beer and cigarettes, though I do hope you are not sharing them with those kids you are supporting. How's that jealousy problem going?

If the only way you can argue against welfare is to call it socialism (every developed country in the world has a social safety net) and to misrepresent the poor as not willing to work and always buying beer and cigarettes - then I guess your argument must be pretty lame.

The Liberals have taken a clause in the preamble to the Constitution " to promote the general welfare" and distorted it to mean "to PROVIDE welfare". The premise and purpose of government as the founding fathers saw it was for a minimally intrusive central government, with the majority of the power held by the states and the people.

Ethan you are thinking like a logical conservative again! To make a good liberal you must think with your heart and not with your head. Those people are the downtrodden masses who are just too psycologically stressed by all of the prejudice towards them and it makes it difficult if not impossible for them to hold a job. They are just so downtrodden and depressed that they just cant get out of bed and get to work. You should be proud that your tax dollars are being reallocated to improve these poor peoples standard of living. Why without your support, they might go hungry, or heaven forbid, get gainful employment which will probably negatively affect their self esteem and drive them into even greater depths of depression. Come on have a heart!
