Why do people automatically assume a person who has committed a sex offense did so against a child when only 35 percent of the people listed on the sex offender registry had a child as a victim?

Probably because the impetus for the sex offender registry was originally driven by a case involving an adult and minor. Hence the name "Megan's Law" after 7-year-old Megan Kanka.

The nature of most observers is to assume several falsehoods when it comes to sex offense. One is that sex offenders are male and their victims are female children.

Another is that sex offenders are usually strangers and repeat offenders - both not true in fact.

Another is that anyone arrested (whether convicted or not) must be guilty.

Personally, I'm in favor of a murderer registry, wife beater registry, drunk driver registry, etc... for other sorts of criminals too.

because most of them have against a teen or underage person that is what makes it a sex offense, there are a few and i mean a few handfull that may not have done anything wrong, and the judge is against the wall there and makes a ruling if you are one of the few the few then your lawyer should be able to help my ? is Coeyye if that s how you spell it he was registered and killed someones daughter why wasnt her found out about and why did that happen, that is why the law is so strict now because ppl are tired of seeing kids hurt and I am just as protective of mine and those that arent mine, I take the other stance on the issue and that is this, if you know you are wrong and you touched a child where you shouldnt have or you tried to have sex with a child who is under the age of 16 then you KNOW YOU ARE WRONG period...even if that kid is as horny as a Freshman virgin in College its is still WRONG, so its not in the Justice system at that point it is in you knowing if you are in the wrong or the right, knowing that you are an adult and are accountable and that is it.You do what is right Morally and upstanding or you are weak and give in to what you know is wrong and that is how it is, if you are wrongfully accused then that is different and a lawyer will work that out that is why we have them, they cost alot but when its a matterof innocence and freedom then its a price we have to pay if we are innocent and sadly that is not reimbursible, but in any event our justice system is fair and that is why we have a trial and peers to overlook it, kind of like yahoo answers, lol

most people tend to remember crimes against children more than against adults. Crimes against children are reported more often whereas rapes are under reported by the victims.

also, many people don't know that there are numerous offenses that can result in being listed on a sex offender register. I don't know where your stat of 35% came from, not that I disagree with that, but I see your point. If you assume, you know that that does to you and me.
