Okay my 16 y/o sister is pregnant 8 months pregnant. She doesnt know what shes having, its not that she doesnt want to know, its that everytime she goes see her doctor, the doctor procrastinates and doesnt want to give her an ultra sound, the doctor measures the baby and the cervics but as far as an ultra-sound, the doctor wont do it. I upsetting me because my sisters baby shower is comming up and Im hosting it, I have to buy a light green everything basically because, this doctor is not doing her job, all we need is the ultra sound and to make sure the baby is ok, but this doctor just has my sister waiting. I think she can just give us an order and we can go to another doctor because this doctor is procrastinating, I believe because my sister is underage, this doctor wants to take her time. What do you all think? what do you think we should do?

I think the doctor is being prudent in not doing an exam or test without sufficient medical reason. In the first place, an ultrasound is a diagnostic tool, and discovering the sex of the unborn child is just a nice oh by the way. Even with the best of ultrasounds, if the baby isn't in the right position to reveal things, you still can't tell. As long as everything in the pregnancy is progressing normally, an ultrasound is not indicated, and your insurance probably won't pay for it or authorize it. As far as wanting one just to discover the sex, that treads on delicate territory and is considered unethical practice. So you are just stuck with green and yellow, if you want to stick in the pastel range. Why not go for bright color combos? Boys and girls both wear red, blue, green, yellow, purple, etc. There's no rule that says it has to be pink or light blue. The doctor is doing her job, which is to help deliver a healthy human infant of either sex when the time comes, and to do whatever is prudent to ensure one arrives. It has nothing to do with your sister's age, and everything to do with reasonable and prudent treatment. It looks like you will just have to wait to discover what lies under all the wrappings when the birthday arrives. Sometimes you can peek, and sometimes you can't. As radical as the idea seems, it wasn't all that long ago that you didn't discover what the sex was until the appropriate parts saw daylight for the first time. People survived, and you will too. If having the "correct" color is that important, then wait to buy that special outfit until it's born. And one thing you might consider is buying things other than clothing. New babies need lots of other things, and color isn't a deciding factor.

I think you should back off. The ultra sound is for diagnostic purposes only. If she were having a problem that's a different story. Babies are a surprise.. Buy green and yellow, keep the important things until after the baby is born. The doctor IS doing her job. How selfish of you, you want to put her and the baby through an unnecessary procedure because you can't wait to find out what it is. If the baby wasn't OK,the doctor would order what ever tests are needed. Age has nothing to do with it. The health and well being of the child and the mother are what leads the Doctor, not the fact that you want to know what color to buy. Even if you did get an order for an ultra sound, there is NO guarantee you would be able to tell the sex of the baby. Why not expend this energy on your sister?

I got pregnant at 16 and had three ultrasounds. It's possible the insurance she has doesn't cover ultrasounds, adn they're fairly expensive. Ultrasounds are necessary to make sure the baby is healthy and has no mental or physical problems. And because she's underage is no reason to procrastinate an ultrasound, you don't need consent to perform an ultrasound on a minor. Has she demanded that one be done? Do you know why this OB is procrastinating? She should walk in on monday and demand an ultrasound, or if there's an advice nurse phone line she could call up and schedule one for this upcoming week. She should really do something about this, for the sake of her child.

ultrasound carries risk, if it isn't necessary no doctor will do it. And it won't guarantee you will find out the sex anyway, the only way to know that for sure is amniocentesis and that too is risky and only done if necessary. If your sister is having a normal pregnancy and is not showing any signs of a problem, there is no reason to risk an ultra sound. Certainly not just so you can have the convenience of knowing the sex of the child. The doctor is not procrastinating, the doctor is doing everything right and treating your sister according to her progression. You can change doctors if you wish, but that won't change the fact, they aren't going to order an ultrasound or any other testing if there is no medical need to do so.

drs usually give one ultrasound at 16 weeks and maybe one more around 30. but unless she is sick or there is something wrong, there not going to jsut do one. they have to justify it to the insurance company. if she wants another one she is going to have to go somewhere and pay for it.

i would suggest buying yellow, green, andhite. or waiting til baby is born.

Please tell her to go to another doctor. This doctor doesn't seem to care about her or her baby.

Good luck.
