I did a search in "Search for questions", typed in "Habs" and returned this many results in the first 10-12 pages of search results. These should answer your question in great depth.

In 1924, Madison Square Garden owner Tex Rickard was falsely told by someone that the "H" in the logo of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team stood for "habitant", a French word that in those days was used to denote the farmers of Quebec. Rickard was told that the French players on the team came from the farms and that they were therefore "habitants" or "habs". At the time, the Canadiens were recognized as the French Canadian team of Montreal as opposed to the Montreal Maroons, the English Canadian team. In reality, the team logo of the "C" wrapped around the "H" stands for Club de Hockey Canadien. In 1917, at the founding of the NHL, the team changed its name to that from the previous Club Athlétique Canadien. So there you go - the definition of the Habs, and what the H stands for in the Canadiens' logo!

Habs is short for Habitants. Refered to French-Canadians colonists lived in whats now Quebec. During that time , Canadians farmers traveld from Quebec to Montreal back and forth. (It was not well establish at the time which can explain why they were called habitants.

since nobody listened to me the last time, I'll repeat it again here anyhow lol
Habs is short for Habitants. Habitants means farmers. The opposing team (the english) would call Montreal players farmers as an insult, But since Montreal won most games, the fans started cheering Habitants too...kinda like "take that english people (I can't rememeber what they used to call them) , we farmers are winners". Eventually, these two teams merged, and the name was shortened to Habs.

It's short for Les Habitants. Just as Bucs is for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Birds for the Philadelphia Eagles.
In the future, when you are typing this sort of question, any previous incarnations of it will appear under the question box before you submit your question. That way you won't have to use points for a question that is already in the database. If it isn't, then go ahead and post it.

It's short for Habitants, which is the French Canadian affectionate name for the Canadiens. Habitant was a term used in Quebec to describe settlers, mainly farmers, although it's not a commonly used term today.
