According to Wikipedia, Babe Ruth hit 765 home runs under the current ruling. Under the current foul ball rules Babe Ruth hit 765 researched home runs. The 50 were recorded as foul under previous foul ball rules. The number could be greater than 50. It could be 78 because it has been said that there were extra home runs on top of the 50 that have not been verified. The extras have not been verified like the 50. If the ball went past the poll and went foul after passing the poll and the fence, the ball was declared foul. Another rule was changed on wikipedia to give Ruth 715 home runs because of the new walk off scoring rule. They said that the MLB only gave him one walk off. I would have thought that he had more than one in his baseball career.

How can they change one ground rule and not another? Did they go back and change every hit record for every player after adding in Ruth?

No. The rules may have changed, but the rules he played with are the rules that have to be used to calculate his total. Otherwise, you would have to change the record books every time a rule changed, and you would also have to change the record books for every other change in the league (shorter ball parks, etc)

No, Henry "Hank" Aaron is tied with Barry Bonds right now for the most career MLB homeruns.
That number is what the researchers say Babe Ruth would have hit if the rules were the same. I say if Babe Ruth played today he'd easily have over 800 homeruns. The Ballparks are smaller, the pitching is worse and he'd probably be healthier.

well theyre so many records like that, like perfect game format and such
but the ball parks were bigger, the pitchers didnt pitch like 100, and other things, he could have 1000 in a way, but we documented 714 so it has to just be what we know, not what we assume

I don't know much about baseball because I don't like the sport but I will say this about Barry Bonds I feel when he breaks the record for home runs, it will be a tarnished record because he has used performance enhancing drugs or possibly steroids. I don't like Barry Bonds because he's arrogant and he won't admit what he did and I feel he definitely did use steroids.

no, it matters what the rules are at the time of the home run. thats what umpires are doing before the game, going over ground rules.

Babe Ruth doesn't need it. He is regarded as the greatest baseball player in history by all who know the game.
And he will continue to be regarded as the greatest.
