i cannot remember how i was taught to spell...but i Will say this i do know that in the 7th and 8th grade teachers should not be telling kids to sound words out...because skool is not spelled correctly..the one thing i hate is a person who does not even try and misspells every other word...my son was taught to spell this way in this state they have writing test ever so many years in school to see how they are learning...yeah the spelling doesn't play a part in that its about what they wrote..its all wrong...we are allowing other countries to be smarter than us because we simply do not care..we dont always have a computer in front of us to do the spell checking and god help us some of us cannot even find that damn button

Learning to spell accurately is a new skill. Even a 150 years ago not many people were completely literate, let alone able to spell very well.
Today, people are writing less often. Instead we use Word or similar applications, all of which tell us if we have made a spelling error (according to American English). As a result, folks do not feel obliged to rote learn the correct spelling.

We haven't lost our ability 2 spell, it just that you're in the new age (texting,u don't have enough space 2 write out all of what you have 2 way.) Another is most people have a spell checker, but forget to use it.

People are just too lazy and in schools the idea of learning your 20 new words for your spelling test each week faded away back in the 1970s. It shows that we need to get back to some basics in the curriculum rather than society trying to impose all social issues on to school to deal with rather than parents. The curriculum is so crowded with health, sexual issues, socialisation skills ( yes these are important but should be the domain of parents), driver saftey etc. that the time allowed for the basic skills of literacy and numeracy is very limited.

Two words: text messaging. It's shocking how many people think proper spelling, for any language, isn't worth the effort. The simple fact is the worse you spell, the less intelligent you're perceived as being.

People use the excuse that they don't have time to check things because they are too busy, or they can't read the check spelling block above the answer area. I personally feel people just don't care to put in the effort to spell correctly. People please rent Akeelah and the Bee to get motivated to achieve more in your life. Get Americans educated so we can be a true world leader again.

Text messaging and the internet combined with impatience and laziness. People are too lazy and impatient to take the extra couple seconds it takes to type in proper english. Most of them (MOST, not all) can type in proper english if they actually make the effort, it's the 'actually making the effort' part that's difficult to get anyone to do anymore.
I mean honestly, nowadays most people don't believe my age online because I don't look like I'm having an epileptic seizure while I type.

I am 50 and we used to have to refer to the dictionary.
Today with spell check the society does not have to work to spell.
so that is part of the failure.

dumbed down standards. Look at any teen magazine, see the kind of words they use. That and text messaging. You never really spell out any word, it's always abbreviated.
