friend visiting last week used pc, want to make sure she didn't go to sites that tag with cookies or may carry viruses

Press Ctrl+H you will see history pane left side of the page. or click on history. and if you want to delete all previous visited web site and cookies then
right click on internet explorer>properties>delete cookies,history, files etc.

Of course you mean the "History" right?

Well if you are using IE7, then just click the star in the top left, then the history button.

For Firefox well... you just click the "History" button.

Cookies are not much harm, but if you do have the chance to remove them then go on ahead.

Go to your tools at the top of your explorer and go Internet options, general and half way down the page it says"temporary Internet files, go to the setting and half way down the page it will tell you where the folder is located

click the tab at the top of your browser that says "View" > "sidebar" > "History"

Window will pop up with all the sites visited
