air pump,
live aquarium plants.

Plants maybe cheaper and they will help keep your ammonia levels down. Anarciris(cant spell) is cheap, coldwater plant that will be fine with most fish. It is a good oxygenator.

Air pumps will vary, but i have ones that are used for industry style 300 dollars, to small ones for 5.99 etc...

That isnt that hard.

If you already have a filter, you shouldn't need anything else. Having a filter that is the proper size for the tank will not only filter but add dissolved oxygen through water movement. Try for a "ripple" effect across the surface rather than a "waterfall" where the water comes out. To figure out what size is needed, multiply your tank volume by 5 and 10, and find a filter whith a gallons per hor rating between these numbers.

If you don't have a filter, an air pump with airstone would be cheap, but you don't get the same amount of added oxygen, because there's less disturbance. The bubbles rise to the surface and pop before they add any appreciable amount of oxygen.

Another solution (and this should only be used temporarily) is to aim a fan at the surface of the water to create ripples.

Airpumps will do nothing to add dissolved oxygen to your tank. The easiest way if you are not running a powerhead is to drop your waterlevel by 1/2". This IS the best way. Dissolved oxygen only enters the water by means of air moving across water, i.e. wind, waves, waterfalls, fountains, powerheads etc. Making a waterfall from your filter is the best way other than a power head to add this to the water.

The cheapest way would be as the first poster suggested, take a cup of water from the tank about a foot or two from the surface and dump it back in. Personally, I'd drop the water level 1/2". your filter should really be enough to add the dissolved oxygen to the tank. If not, try looking into a larger filter to handle the tank.

Good luck

Get a cup or something, pick up the water from the tank and drop it back in and the bubbles will combine with the water and cause its oxygen to rise. Cheapest way :]

Small air pumps start around $10.
air hose from bulk at store (new) 10cents a foot.
Air wand $4 to $12 depends on length and brand.

You can also add more filters to your tank.

The more the water moves the more air it will collect.

Air pumps are generally not that inexpensive, but not that expensive either. Plus adding an airstone will cost about $2 more. I'd say that live plants are the best bet. Java Fern / Java Moss are pretty hardy and pretty hard to kill. They don't need to be fertilized, and need very little light.
