Actually, most engines are placed in the middle of the car, just between the rear axle and the cabin. It's not about the weight distribution. It's about the wheel driven.

Push vs pull effect. You'll get higher top speed when you're pushing, but better control when you're pulling (like shopping cart). Sport cars need higher speed thus having rear-wheel drive, normal cars need better control for daily drive, especially in traffic hence the front wheel drive.

By having the engine placed near to the rear axle, power can be efficiently transferred to the rear wheel. Rear engines remove the usage of long shaft along the underside of the car (to connect the engine up front and the rear axle), reducing ample power loss.

Some sports cars have the engine in the rear for better weight distribution. Most sports car have the engine in the front like any other car.

Its more foreign sports cars that have the engines in the rear. Its somewhat the same reason all muscle cars and most sports cars built use rear wheel drive. its the logic that is is more effective to push weight from the rear than to pull it from the front, hence rear wheel vs front wheel drive. Rear engine vehicles use somewhat of the same logic, hypothetically there would be quicker response to the drivetrain because the engine is right there.

Handling, the whole idea is if the weight is in the rear the rear won't swing around corners as much. Also, helps braking because not all the weight is in the front (forward momentum makes it more difficult to stop).
