I think a lot of countries are way too obsessed with beauty. It's not what's on the outside that counts, it's what's on the inside that really matters. If you are a good person, you will be a good person all your life, the looks on the other hand will change.

I dont think everyday people are obsessed with it. But the media is and the people that media has successfully brainwashed are obsessed with beauty. I think more people are obsessed with health, which is a good thing. We do have the unhealthiest diet in the world (as a country).

I agree with you 100%, but sadly, the media - from tv, movies, music industry and magazines - have waaaay too much of an influence on people today. I have found that as I get older, I am more secure with myself and less focused on meeting an impossible beauty standard. My 9-year-old daughter on the other hand, thinks she is fat (she is just right) because she is measuring herself not only to her peers, but to her "role models" in the media. It's up to us parents to watch our kids and teach them to have a healthy self-outlook, as well as to teach them that what matters is the INSIDE of a person - not the outside. I think that most people GET that, but often times don't realize it until they have already gone through the "body beautiful" phase and been hurt by it.

Yes. I completely agree with you. I think it has a little something to do with confidence though. People who look good have higher confidence in themselves and people who are self confident are more likely to work hard to make a difference in the world. Some people are just vain though.

OMG I feel the exact same. It seems like that is all anyone cares about these days. It really makes me sick. There is so much more to life than how you look. I wish every day that it wasn't like that. It makes you feel like you're nothing if you don't look like a celebrity or if you don't have the right name brands. It sucks. Finally someone else gets it.

Isn't that the French?
Americans (and I am one) are always in a hurry and first impressions thus have a larger importance.
In reality, though, can you really support that statement when the average American is obese?

Looking around, I'd have to say they are way too obsessed with food.
