I wasn't sure what would happen if I tried to soak it, then start to reshape it. Is there any possibility that this would work?

put it in a pan or tub of warm water and let it soak until it becomes more pliable. Then shape it with you hands, using rope or bungee cords to hold the new shape. Dry....And if you can, lay it out in the hot sun to dry.

I have done this with smushed baskets.

Yes soaking it will loosen it up allowing you to reshape it.. It probably won't look as good as the original shape it was dried in, but it will work.

If it hasn't been sealed with acrylic or something, you can soak it in water and attempt to re-form it. If it had been sealed, it's not going to be affected.

You may be able to completely un-do and re-do the item. It's not a matter of re-shaping the formed item. You'll need to untwist or unbraid the material and completely re-do it while it's still pliable.

Use clean/sterile water. You won't want to risk mold or mildew. Allow the item to re-dry in sunshine in a well-ventilated area.
