It falls back to when Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single season HR record. Babe Ruth held the single season HR record for many years at 60 homeruns. Babe Ruth performed this feat in 1927, over the course of a single season, which then was only 154 games.

In 1961 Roger Maris hit 61 homeruns over the course of the season, but by then a season was 162 games. Maris didn't hit his 61st HR until the 162nd, or last game, of the season. Maris' HR total was listed above Babe Ruth's in the record book, but was written with an asterisk next to it (61*) to indicate that although Maris broke the record, it took him 8 more games than Babe Ruth to do so. This essentially was baseball officially saying that Maris didn't really beat Babe Ruth's record, but instead performed a different kind of a record.

Fast forward to today. Because it is widely speculated that Barry Bonds is, or has been on steriods, many people feel that his record of hitting 755 HRs is tainted, and thus should be recorded in the record books with an asterisk *, indicating that many, or most, of his HRs were hit while on performing enchancing drugs.

On a side note, in 1991 the asterisk * was taken away from Roger Maris' record of 61 by the commissioner of baseball, stating that "a season is a season" and the asterisk wasn't needed. Of course this all became moot when Mark McGuire broke Roger Maris' single season record in 1998 (and subsequently when Bonds broke McGuire's record in 2001).

a minimum of it might make for some thrilling 'in the previous' and 'after' photos in a Pirates uniform. i does no longer decide for that guy on my team. Pirates have some solid, youthful expertise and in the event that they shop the offense jointly and get some pitching interior the low season, they'd be aggressive interior the subsequent couple of years. Bonds is a criminal duty interior the sphere and is popular for alienating himself from his teammates. He would not even heat up along with his teammates. Signing him this 3 hundred and sixty 5 days is not sensible because of the fact the Pirates are not going to the playoffs. Noone will bear in ideas if the Pirates end over .500.

There will always be those "fair weather fans" who are willing to wave their banner high once the tough got going already, and feed off of personal dilemmas that may surround certain players.

If I ran the broadcasting network, I'd have my production guys overlay the following line at the bottom of the screen:

* We Are Idiots.

the asterisk is a sign that he cheated. i think it's stupid because people are just wasting their time and money making them. it's not like barry pays attention to any of it and it wont make him go cry in a corner. these people are just upset that bonds will break the greatest sports record of all time. besides has bonds ever test positive for steroids? NOPE. and in america, you are innocent until proven guilty.

the star means that in a document stating the fact that barry bonds holds the home run record, there will be an * placed next to his name stating the FACT that he used a prefomance enhancing drug, steriods, to help him get there.

EX.

Barry Bonds- 756*
Henry Aaron- 755

*this player use STEROIDS to get his home runs!

because REAL baseball fans want the * placed in the record book beside his name, to show it was achieved via steroids.
