Here are some really good ideas:
1)Michigan-Visit "Bronner's Christmas Wonderland" its AWESOME!!!!!!! The store is about 2 street blocks of year round Christmas!!!!!!! Then stop over at Zehnder's for the best meal of your life. Here is the website for Bronners.. www.bronners.com
2)Arizona-Sedona is beautiful especially in the spring or fall. You can have a picnic along Oak Creek Canyon, swim in the river. Walk around the art galleries in town. The #1 thing you want to do is take the "Pink Jeep Tours"...they take you way into the back country and they will actually climb the hills and you will see some beautiful scenery. Stop and vist Montezuma National Monument..that is very interesting.
3)California-I would say start in San Diego and work your way up the coast. Stop at all the Misisons in California and learn about the history of the Missions. Go to Seaport Village in San Diego and do some shopping and have a nice meal in one of the restaurants there. Take the narrated trolley tour..that would be fun. Visit Coronado Island and walk around the hotel...its beautiful!!! Take the amtrak up the coast...thats a really great way to see the scenery. When I get up to Santa Barbara...I would stop and walk up State Street and go through all the neat shops there, visit Stearns Wharf and there is a boat tour company at the end of the pier.
1hour north of Santa Barbara is "Solvang" its a danish town here in California!! There are some really unique shops and the Santa Ynez Mission is right on Mission Drive. Go to the "Solvang Restaurant" and have some abelskivers...they are delicious!!! They are pancake balls topped with jelly and powdered sugar...scrumptious!!!!! Go up to Big Bear Lake and visit the Discovery Center...they do nature hikes, there is a boat tour on the lake, there are some great shops in the village. You can camp out at one of the campgrounds on the lake.
Well, I hope that will help give you some places to think about!!! Have a great trip wherever you decide to go!!!!!!

If you want to see the east coast than just rent a car and drive around the Northeast. You will have some fun in Boston and NYC and see some very nice places.
If you want to have fun, great weather, beaches, lots of people, Night life, international hub/gateway than go to Miami in the winter.

Virginia----is very historical around Williamsburg, Jamestown...beautiful and a great time to go would be in the fall.
Philladelphia, PA there is so much to do.
Vermont in the fall... crisp, cool, beautiful colors...
oh my gosh don't even get me started... I love the East!
I could go to any of these cities and be so excited.. but there are so many more cities on the eastern coast that are just as wonderful too.

I would fly into Boston and then travel up the coast of Maine. You will need a week, but it would be extremely enjoyable.

Almost everything in Washington DC is free. And you can take the metro (like a subway sort of) pretty much anywhere and its cheaper then renting a car and paying for gas. Wait until September or later though, it gets pretty humid and hot!

perhaps detect a distinctive motel in puerto rico? no passport for US electorate. yet once you're able to attend that long for the trip, why not basically get a passport? it will take like 10 months to achieve this, so begin. a jiffy to fill in papers, months to get approved/recieve passport. no clue what expenses there are...
