Against, and I'm a former teacher and now have a child going to school that wears them.
Heck, when I was in school we WANTED uniforms, like the private schools had. What was wrong with us?
I had students miss school because they didn't have a clean uniform. Seriously. And I believed them. (They weren't truant.) Do you know how much time is spent telling kids to tuck in their shirt? Most aren't allowed to wear hooded sweatshirts - and I had a daily fight with middle school students. For what purpose?
Teachers will say it makes for more order; days kids are out of uniform are crazy. Maybe. It's new, and anytime there's something new, things are going to be crazy. They'll get over it.
There's the argument about fashion and self expression, for and against. Sure, if you have money you can still wear it - might be jewelry, those expensive shoes, the jumper with the prominent tag. Have you SEEN some of these uniform codes though? What kind of belt you can wear, the details of shoes (no lights for elementary school!) Stop already!
Seriously, what are uniforms supposed to do? Make everyone alike? Why? And should every parent need to shovel out the money for uniform clothes? Sure, there are uniform closets, but I'd rather resources be spent on other necessities. And what about the suppliers that sell the clothes? They have a captive audience. If you aren't shopping on-line, you don't have many options.
We have so many more important issues going on in the schools than who is wearing what and should you call home. I was in a middle school that had a dress code and rarely had issues there. Thanks for letting me vent.
P.S. Kids without much money can still look like they don't have much money in uniform clothes. I've seen some with holes and dirt, worn day after day.

If you're in a private school, that's one thing. But I am against it in public schools. Enforcing a uniform law is eliminating freedom at an early age. And a move could easily be made at a later age to eliminate further freedoms without any objections being raised because people got used to it when they were young.
Now I know what I'm saying seems to make no sense when I start off saying it's one thing in a private school and another in a public school. But I believe the two schools are different in the way they are governed. And I believe that a person expects things to be a bit different in a private school from a public school. I'm not gonna say they'll want to wear a uniform, maybe they will and maybe they won't. However, I see it more like being a police officer. As long as you're attending that school you have to have the uniform if they say to. Where as I see uniforms in public school as more of enforcing a totalitarian regieme.
I'm not against a dress code since that doesn't actually mean wearing a uniform.

Against.
This past school year my school got it and I hated it. But I'm going to high school now, so I don't have to do it.
I think kids should dress how they want to as long as it's decent. I understand that some schools feel as if they need it. But when school was still going on, they were getting onto other people about stuff but others they let come how ever and didn't care. That's another reason why I am against it. If a school is gonna do dresscode they need to treat everybody equally and actually hear out the students b/c students are what make school a school and without students the school would be nothing at all!
All the best!!!

I believe that uniforms are a good idea. Even though there are a lot of students out there who claim that free dress shows individuality, uniforms show you as a group and representation of the school that you attend. Many students may not have many clothes like the 'rich' who can afford to wear something different every day. If they all had uniforms, then there would be less squabbles and make it safer for the younger students to wear a uniform.
In Australia, where I live, we have uniforms in all public and private schools. When I was younger, it was not compulsory to wear the uniform at the public schools, but my sister and I always had to. Now it is compulsory. I have attended both public and private and even a private boarding school. So have worn uniforms all my life. I am now 28 with 2 children of my own and have always put them in uniform.
It is much easier to have all students in uniforms so as to identify them at a glance. When wearing your uniform, you must wear it with pride to represent your school so the public can gain awareness of the type of students that are at that school.
Hope this helps. If you want more information, please don't hesitate to IM me or e-mail me. I am in Australia though, so if I don't answer straight away, remember the time difference.
Have a great day/night!!!

I have to agree with 'em'...both.
I went to a school and wore a uniform. Just take a look at the word; so everyone that goes to the school looks 'uniform'. I thought it was great because school should not be a fashion show and who has this or that. I wasn't worried about what to wear (like staying up the night before to decide what I was going to wear) and it helped me just focus more on school than where the girl next to me got her shoes.
On the other hand, I didn't really know how to dress myself! I know that sounds really dumb but its the truth. But then again, me saying this totally contradicts what I said above. It also does help people express themselves. I feel in this day and age, alot more people express themselves thru clothing.

Well I'm pretty stuck in between but more sided with school UNIFORMS. I do like the idea of every child wearing the same thing so their is no conflict, but then stores have a habit of taking advantage of us parents and pricing things a little too high. Which is the ONLY downfall of uniforms. Other than that it's pretty good, because I see smaller children learn to focus on school more than the new cool sneakers or shirt that the next kid has.

I am for uniforms because everyone is dressed the same, which takes away a lot of prejudices - who has the best whatever and has more money etc. also it makes you look at the person not just the outer appearance, which can lead to you discovering some really cool friends that otherwise you may never have bothered with. It also takes away some of the distractions that come with dressing however you want, and remember the main reason you go to school is to learn something, not to socialize !!!

I don't like the idea of uniforms in schools, but I can see why they would use them. I do believe that if the school uses a uniform then it should be provided by the school and not have to be paid for by the individual.
If all schools had a uniform policy then kids wouldn't be wearing inappropriate clothing to school. The poorer kids wouldn't be made fun of because of the way they dress. But it would be harder for kids to show their personality if everyone was dressed the same.

I am FOR uniforms in school. Requiring uniforms in school takes a lot of pressure off of students to "fit in" or be cool because they're wearing the latest clothing styles. With everyone dressing the same, more attention can be paid to getting an education. No one can think they're better than anyone else because of what they're wearing. Also, for the students who can't afford to wear the latest fashions, everyone wearing a uniform can somewhat alleviate the pressures of perceived financial status.

STRONGLY AGAINST
Uniforms stop students from expressing themselves.
There should, however, be a dress code that is actually enforced (not one that is in place, but ignored by all).
If you are in a good school with good students, you will not have to worry about being teased anyway. Students won't care about your social and economic background. Even if there are a few bad apples, you can usually find some good friends.
