Exactally how hard is it to get into University of Minnesota? I'm going to be a senior next year and im interested in going to college there. Im 3rd in my class of 40 students. I have a 3.9 gpa. Ive been class president twice and class rep once. Im in extracurricular activites such as volleyball, basketball and softball and im also in FFA and a member of National Honor Society. I know it sounds like a lot, but do i have a chance of getting in. I know I cant get into UW Madison because I only scored a 21 on my ACTs. I want to go on to school to become an architect. Do i have a good shot at getting in? What are my chances?

Your chances are excellent.

Minnesota decided to do something a little different from most states. Most states have a number of large public universities and one magenet campus. Wisconsin, North Carolina, California, Virginia and Michigan are all frat examples of this. It makes getting into their premier university much harder than their second tier schools.

Minnesota decided to have one really large university -- though it does still have a number of smaller public university. U of MN has many departments that are highly rated (e.g., their Mathematics department is in the top 15, their Law School in in the top 20, their Economics and Journalism schools are in the top ten). But the university is not nearly as selective in letting people in as comparable state universities.

If you are a resident of Minnesota, then you will almost surely get in. If you ar enot a resident, then I think it is still highly likely.

As for Wisconsin -- you ought to still apply. Except for your ACT score, you have impressive statistics. You might think about taking the ACT over again -- or about taking the SAT. Perhaps you can bring up your test scores.

Try retaking the ACT...most scholarships and such require at least a 24 or so. Or maybe even try the SAT and see if you score better on that. You have an excellent GPA, keep it up. Your extracurriculars are excellent as well. You have a great chance of getting in.

The statistics - I have a College guidebook which shows:
73% of students who applied were admitted.
ACT 25th/75th percentile: 22-27 (24.5 average).
29% of students in top 10th percentile of class.
60% in top 25th percentile.

I recently just went through the entire college process and had a good friend who applied, got accepted, and is going to the University of Minnesota in the fall. His grades were fairly good i believe his GPA was a 3.5 and he had minimal extracurricular activites except he was an eagle scout. He got in and after reading your description, I believe you will have a very good chance if to get accepted.

you are pretty much in.. i have dozens of friends who go to
"the u". its really easy to get in. most of them have like 3.5 gpa's with not much EC except like sports and stuff. the only thing draggin u down i see is your act score, its not the best. madison is really hard to get into, its probably the hardest public school in the midwest to get into..
