I have taken AP Engl. Lan and got a 4 on the exam, and am also taking AP Lit This year. I was thinking mayb this will compensate a little for the poor verbal score

I think you are on the borderline.

Your grades are typical of those who are accepted. However, about 75% of students accepted at Columbia have higher SAT scores than you do.

My feeling is that you are qualified to go to Columbia and some people with similar statistics to yours will get in. But admission is certainly not a sure thing for you.

If you continue to do as well as you have been doing, you will certainly get into a top tier university. Maybe it will be Columbia -- but maybe not.

Spend a lot of time crafting your admissions essay. It may be the deciding factor.

The person who answered before I did is a bit too optimistic. Everyone at Columbia has a great GPA and tons of AP's. Right now, you're EC's are OK, but your scores need some work, particularly your verbal. Right now, I would say your chances are marginal. Columbia has an acceptance rate of about 10%.

According to collegeboard.com, the middle 50% is scoring a minimum of 660 on SAT verbal. That is the BOTTOM 25%. Your math score is pretty good and will help you out.

By no means are you a lock. You have some work to do, and even then, no one is a sure thing at an institution of this calibur.

Students who inquire about Columbia also looked at:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
NYU
Brown
Cornell
Dartmouth
U.S. Naval Academy
University of Pennsylvania
Boston University
U.S. Military Academy
MIT

Consider the competition you are stepping into.

For overall chances, I'd put you at a high reach right now for Columbia.

You have a shot at it; as you said, your verbal score is weak, so whether or not your strong math and the other factors will compensate for it really depends on who else applies. The reason it is so hard to predict who will be accepted is because it does depend upon who applies in any particular year.
