What is your experience, where are the good places you have lived or are living? Is there a rental community you would reccommend? My income is $36,000 with excellent credit score.

I grew up in DC and then lived there as an adult. Just sold my house a few years ago. Unfortunately,DC is one of the highest real estate markets as you prob know. $1200/month won't get you anything in the city itself. In the city more like $1500-2500! Northern Virginia (Arlington, Alexandria, Annandale, Fairfax, Leesburg, etc.) is decent place to live and many communities to pick from in this price range. Metro has extensive routes for pretty painless commute. Some nice apt communities too.

Or if moving into new job, ask ahead with future co-workers. Sometimes word of mouth is the best. Or take a 3 day trip there if feasible and check it out in person.

Good luck

You'd probably have to live way outside of DC, or else live in a bad neighborhood. I live 40 miles south of DC and four years ago was paying $865 for a townhouse in Fredericksburg. I live with my mom now- I couldn't cut it on my $35K salary. Right now I commute to Alexandria, but there's no way I could live closer. Frankly, I don't know how people survive up in northern VA, though they all seem to be loaded.
