When I was 17 (1973), me and my bf hitched our way around Britain just for the hell of it! We pitched a tent on peoples farms and enjoyed seeing the difference in peoples life-styles and cultures. Its amazing how Great Britain is a relatively small island and yet the people are so diverse from one county to the next! It was a good experience though. I wouldn't recommend hitching now though - too many freaks and weirdos about!!

Way back when I was young and stupid I used to hitchhike all the time, but it was the '70s and things were different. I wouldn't recommend it today.

Only once. My cousin and I hitched a ride from a bus stop to her house, less than 2 miles away, because we were too lazy to walk. I was probably 12 years old and mortified the entire time because I'd never taken a ride with a total stranger before.

i hitchhiked from thousand oaks to ventura. it was after clubbing and we just wanted to try it. we had a friend take the car home and stashed money all over ourselves, just in case. if we got mugged, we'd give them the $20 from the pocket and still have $ in our bras and shoes. we stood by a freeway onramp and said no to the first group . two cars with about 10 guys. scary. the second guy was a 25 or 30 year old with a baby seat. he lived in ventura, 10 miles past our town. we went but he wanted one of us to drive. turns out, he'd been drinking and didn't want to drive the 20 miles home.
he was so nice, we drove to his house and began to walk. we found ourselves in a seedy part of downtown and ate at the vagabond motor hotel. it was about midnight now. we walked for awhile and saw nothing but prostitutes, vagrants and palm reading rooms. we scraped our money together and called a taxi.

didn't quite make it home. we got dropped at baker's square in hueneme and i sat on the curb while my friend called for a ride. turned out she called a guy we both knew. he'd asked us both out that night. she told him she didn't feel well and i'd told him i had to babysit. we were busted but he gave us the ride.

great memory, thanks. have a star.

Yes, when I was 14. I ran away from home. Walked away, I considered it just going out for a walk. I left Noblesville, Indiana and ended up in Loveland, Ohio. I had five separate rides and I was not traveling alone, I had a guy friend with me.
