Well, Vista has an interesting glitch most people who use it know about now. Here's the news...
Vista was designed that, when an app stopped running, it's RAM returned to the free pool.
Here's the catch:
Not all programs WILL release the RAM.
I'd suggest getting as much RAM as you can get. Even using simple, low-use programs with 1 gig, you'll only get about four/five hours use of Vista.
Of course, you could buy a RAM scrubber like Memturbo, which forces RAM to be released, thus allowing you to run as long as you need.

run Vista with at least 2GB of RAM. you can run it with less, but it will run much slower. Vista needs basically the same hardware as hard core gaming such as enough RAM and a fast video card. DO NOT RUN VIDEO ON THE MOTHERBOARD IF YOU WANT VISTA TO RUN DECENTLY! you must use a real video card. do not let anybody else lie to you and tell you that video on the motherboard will run Vista just fine.

it all depends on what you want to do.
if you have two 512MB ram chips and all you do on your computer is surf the Internet and write papers for school 1GB of ram should be sufficient, but if you plan on downloading music i would suggest 2GB of ram. now, if you are using your computer to play games and download music i would suggest at least 2GB of ram preferably 4GB
