You are having a party, say a graduation party, and you are expected to invite the family. The problem is, one member or branch, feels that any party should have them at the center of attention. The father is a roaring, nasty drunk, complains there either isn't any or enough alcohol to keep his buzz running, is carrying a feud on with another member - branch, and wants to keep insulting and picking fights with them, the spouse of the nasty drunk, is an over 50 Paris Hilton wannabee and dresses and acts like a street corner hooker. Their youngest child is a holy terror who physically assaults anyone who doesn't give him his way.

Sure, don't invite them. That would be the easy answer, but the patriarch of the family feels that all his children should just get along, and is being gaslighted that all the other's don't care for him the way Boozie and Paris do......so to not invite them would be fueling their fire. Any suggestions?

I have a few suggestions.

Send out invitations when you think the boozer is out of town or busy.

Send out invitations that clearly state it is an alcohol free party.

Call ahead and ask that differences be left at the door as this is in honor of your child's achievement and not a time to hash things out.

Have a kid only party. The graduate and his/her friends only.

Go somewhere so if things do get out of hand you and your family can leave when you want.

Good luck, I have a family just like yours. Its not any fun at all.

Sounds like you feel like you will end up FORCED to invite them all at this point. Might I suggest having it in a public place the does NOT serve alcohol and make it with a shortened time limit? At another time you could have another party with a special list of invitations. For my daughter's party, we simply had an open-house type party immediately following her graduation. Family came as well as her best friends and seniors from her Band. I had Subway sandwiches, chips and dips, brownies, cupcakes, cookies, and a big tub of iced down sodas. Both my husband and I planned to attend her Project Graduation party as chaperones, so within one hour we all had to be out of the house and ready to load onto the Project Graduation busses! NOW as they are heading off to college, she has invited all the Band Seniors back for an "Off To College" nacho party. We don't feel obligated to invite family to that. Afterall, it is supposed to be all about the kids, isn't it?

Good luck!

So it's official? I'm getting a party? Now I only have until next June to plan it! Yea me! But you know the younger terror will have a party that he has to go to, or he might need a party too. When was the last time they showed up to anything that wasn't centered on them. They weren't even decent enough to go to Amanda's party so I don't even want them to bother with me anymore.

Just invite them just to keep the parents happy then have a private party after somewhere else.

When you invite them make sure you say it will be a dry party. (No alcohol)

Send the invitations but give the wrong address. Send them a mapquest with an address thats similar but wrong. so they go to the wrong place. Or just tell them the wrong date like its sunday but it really took place on saturday.
