Kevin Garnett is a fantastic talent. In terms of comparing athleticism there is none. Bird looks like he should be coaching or eating popcorn. Garnett is the athletic ideal. At nearly 7 feet tall he has the coordination of a much smaller man. But here is where the rubber meets the road.
I would like to quote Shaun Merriman (S.D. Chargers) concerning playing professional football. I'm sure this quote holds true for all competitive team sports.
(paraphrasing)
"You have the fast guys that can do all the athletic stuff, you have the strong guys that seems unstoppable at times. Then you got the guys that just 'know'. They always make the right play because they JUST KNOW."
Larry Bird "knows" how to play basketball like few ever have in the history of the game. When you couple that with fantastic shooting, a variety of shots, every basketball skill needed to compete and an intense desire to win, Bird becomes the perfect basketball player in an unlikely package. "The Hick from French Lick" would be a viable centerpiece for any championship run in his prime. During his time, the liberal 3 point shooting of today would not be tolerated. He rarely shot more than 200 threes in a season. In recent years Kobe Bryant has shot AT LEAST 300 three pointers and AS MANY as 518 in a season. Still, Bird's lifetime 3pt % is 37.6%. Larry Bird also had the gift that many stars of that era had. He made his teammates better by helping them get into scenarios that would insure their success.
If Garnett spent more time around the basket I would say he could be just as influential in leading a team to success1. The simple fact is he is the best of the current group of "hybrid" big men that don't spend enough time around the basket. This would also help him make his teammates better. Larry had a number of seasons that he stacked up 500+ assists. So far Garnett has only one (495) and another season in which he came close (466).
Using a big man the way that Minnesota used Garnett is not the way to make him most effective. It's sort of like bringing an Indy Car to a Funny Car Drag Race. Sure, your car is fast but you are in the wrong race son!

Larry Bird without question. He is almost as far ahead of Garnett as Jordan is ahead of Kobe. But let's give Garnett a few years with these Cs to see what he can do.

Both impact the game and are franchise players. Bird was better outside, Garnett inside. Bird probably had more leadership on the court in my opinion.

You shouldn't be allowed to discuss basketball if you think Garnett even belongs in the discussion with Bird!
