I think extra cirriculars are wonderful activities, and boost a studen'ts chance of being accepted to college. However, not all students are good at time management and put these activities before studying. Extracirriculars are just that- extra. School should always be first priority, and parents need to enforce this rule.

a well rounded person develops their appreciation for the arts, develops their social skills, develops their body, not only their mind.

Music education ties in to math, and playing an instrument is a discipline which develops perseverance.

Sports can also be character forming.

Some extracurricular activities encourage kids to be more civic minded.

Finally, kids need time that's not spent in either study or structured extracurricular activities. They need time for play, imagination, and creativity.

Stanford engineering professors have complained that their students have never "tinkered"....taken apart things around the house, etc., and have only book learning.

Teaching kids to tinker so they can design tomorrow's machines

STANFORD -- In this disposable and computerized society, the kids who will be tomorrow's engineers and inventors aren't tinkering at home the way they used to.

As a result, young men and women often arrive at engineering school with more exposure to calculus and physics than to machines, Sheppard said. They won't stay that way for long at Stanford, however, if they take a course from any of the 13 faculty members in the design division of the mechanical engineering department, a group committed to getting students to roll up their sleeves.

No, in fact I think extracurricular help to enhance studies. Whether its sports, art, etc, it teaches them discipline, following through and earning something.

It may force the parent to determine scheduling both extracurricular and studies, but it can be done.

In addition, look at it this way. When colleges look at applicants, if a student is well rounded, including good grades and extracurricular activities, they may get into the college of their choice.

Well...according to me, it is the extra-curricular activities that play an important role in building and developing a child's interest towards anything. I think these activities can help a lot in giving rise to well-rounded personalities. It is very important for parents to keep this in mind and allow their kids to indulge in these activities for these keep children happy and helps in bringing out the creativity and talent in them. One such school that I personally feel is great for kids is Genesis Global School based in Noida, India that have their own Genesis Learning Studios that completely focuses on the development of children through extra-curricular activities. They offer a variety of these activities which are really great. My younger brother has recently joined Genesis Leraning Studios and he is enjoying his time there.
