Please help! He looks so sick. He has sat at the bottom of his aquarium for two days and looks like he is weighed down in back. I fed him and he pathetically tried to swim up to get the food, and he swam almost straight up, but he couldn't get to the top of the water to eat the food. This is making me so upset, what can I do for him? He is two and a half years old and I don't know what to do, please help me.

I know I'm not feeding too much. :( I wish there was something more I could do for him, but I will try cleaning his aquarium and buying the medicine. He's been through two moves with me from Texas to Ohio and back to Texas again, meaning he's ridden in the car for probably about 40 hours and seen the inside of many hotel rooms and relatives houses. He's always been so strong and I don't want to loose him. People always think I'm crazy for being so attatched to my fish, but I love my little Captain Jack (that's his name).

He is in a one gallon, unfiltered, unheated tank. He does look a little different, his chest seems kind of big and his eyes look bigger (but they aren't hugely bigger, I don't think its pop eye).

Has he been pooping a normal amount? It sounds like he is overfed and bloated or perhaps constipated. Try not feeding him for a while and then feeding him a tiny amount of the squished up inside of a frozen or steamed green pea. This will help with constipation if that's the problem. And even if it isn't the problem, going without food for a day or two will not hurt your betta and feeding him a bit of pea every once in a while is good for him. Also, don't listen to those who say he's dying of old age! A healthy, well-treated betta should easily live to be 5.

I have a betta and he has been with me for almost 30 months. I feed i 3 peices of betta food two time a day. When i wake up and before i go to bed. When changing the tank only clean 1/3 of it or else he may go into shock. Use the Start Right for tanks every time you change it. Fish are elergic to clorine and WILL kill them if they contiue breathing in clorine.

well i had mine for 5 years.... and he did that every once in awhile and at first i was scared, but he always seemed to get better, so i just fed him the same amount like i always did... but then finally one time he did it he died... i would say if hes been acting fine for the two and a half yeah of having it then just treat it the same way you have been treating it.... dont overfeed or underfeed him now that hes sick especially... make sure you clean out the aquarium really good 2, bc sometimes mine got really sick when that happened... bes of luck....

OK i had this problem with my goldy fish.

Your feeding him too much!(or hes dying)

Dont feed him that much(maybe only 2 times a day)

and take half the water out of the tank so he can swim up to get to the top better.

My gold fish i 4 years old and still going strong. He did that a couple times and i helped him by taking water out.

But your fish might be dying.

BEst luck to you and your fishy.

don't buy meds until you know exactly what's wrong with him. medications are very hard on fish. it shouldn't be old age, they can live 5-7yrs with good care.

you didn't give us to much info, please answer these questions and I'd be happy to help, you can also email me if you'd like.

*what is he kept in? (bowl? tank? size?)
*is it filtered?
*is it heated?
*is he showing any bloating, discoloration, spot, speckles, patches, or any othe symptoms that he has never had before?

Poor boy is probably 75-80 years old in fish years. Fish don't live to long. But he's probablt dying of old age.
