how far do you have to play to get the other two cities, not just los santos unlocked? what is the specific mission called? does it take long to get there?

After the mission: "Are You Going to San Fierro?" you gain access to San Fierro and it takes exactly 44 missions before you can get to San Fierro from the first mission.
There are 24 missions in San Fierro plus there are 13 more missions in the Desert area. I think that you can do some Desert Missions and be in Las Venturas at the same time also but I'm not sure. But ,it takes 81 missions from the very beginning to access Las Venturas and San Fierro.

It took me forever to get to the second island on the map its the one to the left. I am not sure what the exact mission is but I think that your close when you start doing the missions that are in country area on the first island there really to country areas one to the north and one to the southeast i believe its the one in the southeast i recommend trying to follow the story line don't do any missions that you don't have to do and don't do any side mission they just take up time.

"green sabre" mission to go from los santos to badlands
12 missions in badlands last one is "are you going to San Fierro" then you go to san fiero last mission of that is "The Da Nang Thang" then to go to las venturas some missions can be skipped but most the missions are a piece of cake so its not hard to get to the new cities

It takes at least 8 missons. There is no specic misson.
