World War One was a P (censored ny Yamster) ing Match between the Western Allies, mainly Britain Belgium France and Italy, eventually America, and the Russian Empire, against the Central Powers of Germany and the Austrian Hungarian Empire, a war which consumed millions of lives billions of dollars beginning August of 1914 and sputterring to an end on November 1918.

It was caused by misplaced pride and confusion, a tangled web of alliances and decades of prent up violence between nations that 'hated' one another, most of then tied in with economic fears - - - example in America in 2007 kvetch about d*** imigrants and foreigners stealing their jobs, now imagine that those immigrant & foreigners are next door and their government is threatening to attack?

The failure of Diplomacy contributted to the Start of the War. War sparked when the heir to the Austrian throne was assinated by a terrorist - - - Austria threatened Serbia which had aided the terrorist , made impossible demands and launched a war. Germany launched a preemptive strike against France and Russia because some bone head suggested it was wise to do so (Herr Von Rumsfeld an Cheney - - - just kidding) .

Stupidity was an active ingrediant. War was an expediant to economic growth until soldiers bogged down in Mud and Modern Technology out striped Man/Woman's ability to deal with it.

World War I was a widespread and costly war fought 1914-1918. The primary opponents were: on one side, the Entente (Belgium, the British Empire, the France and its colonial troops, Greece, Italy, Japan, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania, the Russian Empire, Serbia, the United States, and some smaller European, South American and Asian states) and on the other side the Central Powers (the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bulgaria, the German Empire and the Ottoman Empire). The war took place in Europe, the Middle East and the Atlantic Ocean, and the casualties were something like 9 million dead. There were many causes for the war, but one important one is that the various states had joined multi-party defensive treaties guaranteeing that each member would join in any defensive war fought by its partners. Another was that the United Kingdom had a firm policy of maintaining the greatest European naval fleet, but Germany went on a huge building spree to attempt to match or near that strength in its own navy. The assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a Serbian revolutionary in 1914 brought the already tense situation to full scale war. In most cases the technology and war strategy for the attack (frontal assaults by infantry, in particular) were outstripped by defensive measures (machine guns, artillery and poison gas), so that large, quick advances were very rare, and territorial gain nearly always very costly.

Well ty, i really cant say how someone can not know what happened in world war 1. or at least anyone outside of the 7th grade. but just to refresh your memory. the Germans launched an attack on europe in the 19, teens. and in 1914 the u.s. reluctantly entered the war after their ship, the "Lusitania" was sunk by german u-boats. that outrage caused the u.s. to join the allied side of the war against the axis powers. Germany took down many europe forces such as belgium, france, and along with the soviet union they seemed almost victorious. but after the "battle of the british" the u.s. and allies seemed a dominant force in the war and the final battle of Jutland. many considered the battle of bellau wood to be a turning point. also, world war 1 also seemed to be a spark in lighting the germans into a second attack on the eastern world in wwII.

Suggest you read The Guns of August, Tuchman. It is most readable and accurate.

Note: The US did not enter the war until 1917, there was no Soviet Union at the the time of the war, Aug 1914 to Nov 1918

World War I was the war that started all the technology of modern warfare. It was brutal, bloody, and nearly wiped out a generation of young, European men. Land grabbing, politics, and eventually the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie by Serbian terrorist Gabriel Princip gave way to four years of Hell.
