I am currently replacing an engine in a 85 Toyota 4 runner I bought with a rod thrown through the block.definately not rebuildable as the rod is hanging out of the block just above the starter (#3) and I can see inside the engine.in any case I would never take a chance rebuilding any kind of piston or rod damage as usually something caused this.the 4 runner had zero coolant in it which led me to suspect severe overheating which is hard on cylinder heads as well as other components.other causes would be no oil or oil pressure or extremely high rpm's.do your self a favor and just replace the engine with a junkyard, new or rebuilt one,it will save more headaches later.

A blown rod can mean many things...your connecting rod had come loose from either the crankshaft or the piston pin...or the rod broke between the crank or the piston. Usually a broken rod is better than a rod that came loose at either end. If you don't have a big puddle under the pan and there's are no visible holes in the block or pan...you MIGHT be able to fix it. But....if there's daylight in the block...you're screwed. I have "pinned" a Harley block but a V-8 is a lot of trouble. to pin a broken block you have to have a bunch of castiron rod that you can thread. A hole is drilled in the block and tapped about 1/8" past the end of the crack..a piece of cast rod is "doped" and screwed in the hole a second hole is drilled and tapped..the new hole must overlap the first "pin" and a second cast rod is screwed in to the new hole. Keep drilling and pinning until the crack is filled. If there's pieces missing you ought to find them...but a rebuilt engine is simpler.

A rod that has been thrown or blown in a engine means that substantial damage has occured in the motor and the conector to the piston from the crankshaft has come apart.... this will in every case ruin all the major components in the motor...ie.. the crankshaft, Piston, Engine block cylinder wall,
the cylinder head, etc,,,, sometimes even the camshaft gets broke and valves bent.....a new motor or remanufactured or rebuilt motor is the correct answer to the cars problem.....

I have dealt with this many times. A blown rod is when the piston of the engine has separated from the crank which is what turns everything. Two options: One, remove the engine and replace with a new or rebuilt one. Two, remove engine, rebuild it and put it back. If you know what you're doing you can rebuild it fairly cheaply...but if not then it's best to get another motor.

It means that youve blown a rod through the oilpan or through the block; the engine is toast in most cases.
Quickest fix is to replace the engine.

Push rod or connecting rod? A bent push rod is no biggee to replace, and usually does not do major damage. A "thrown" connecting rod on the other hand normally does major damage. It can go right thru the block, can result in heavy damage to the cylinder, crank, block, etc etc etc.

The piston connecting rod is broken. This can be caused by abuse bad materials or worn parts that allow the rod to knock then break. If there was no noise prior to the break I would suspect abuse.

if the rod and piston are still attatched to the crankshaft it may be rebuildable.... known good used engines is an option
