After the arrest, an investigation will be conducted. Then a case will be filed against the suspect if there is a determination of a probable cause that a crime was committed. Bail will be recommended if applicable.

It depends what state or county you are in. In Arizona they have a phone in the holding cells to make collect calls from. You see the judge after the investigation has taken place (some crimes don't need a thorough investigation like if you were arrested for a DWI or something) The judge determines the bail (Generally the first court hearing is the next day if you get put in at night, and later in the afternoon if you get put in during the morning hours) or determines if you are eligible to be released on your own recognizance (no bail, you're just released because you're not considered someone who'd try to run and/or hurt someone) The first court hearing while in jail has nothing to do with your guilt or innocence, the judge just explains to you the specifics of the crime you committed. You'll be given a date to return to court for your arraignment (pleading guilty/not guilty) and you are sent back to your cell to finish up your arrangements for leaving.

If you are in LA you get a free get out of jail card from the sheriff ....No...I'm kidding.

Your are booked, photographed, fingerprinted, maybe strip searched. Depending on the infracture you may have to go before a judge inorder for him to determine the amount of bail. If you are arrested for DUI....you will go into what is called a drunk tank. You will get to sleep it off on a hard slab in the cell.

If the local constabulary where you are at is like what we have here, you get beat up and shoved into a cell until you get bailed or go to court.

The phone call is an urban legend that doesn't exist (except on TV shows). You don't get one.
