My 13 year old nephew brought up the fact that everyone in this world is racist to a point. When I told him he was wrong, he asked me if I would be more nervous if I was in a dark alley at 2 am if the guy walking up to me was black or Spanish rather than white. I said yes, BUT, there's a difference between fear & racism, he said it's pretty much the same, is he right?

Safety may have more to do with your nephews example than fear or racism. Who in there right mind would be walking down a dark alley at 2 am in the first place. It wouldn't matter to me if it were a white, black, spanish, cuban or president Bush for that matter. I still wouldn't feel completey comfortable in either situation. So you might happen to explain safety and racism, and knowing the difference between the two.

no i think your nephew is wrong...i would be scared either way. you are a woman....in an alley.....late at night....alone. if it were me i would be thinking who in there right mind would be up at this hour??? not hes hispanic im scared or hes white ok i feel safer.

so i think your nephew is wrong. hes sayng everyone is racist to a point...like racism is natural or instictual (sp?) its not, racism is something that is taught...through your family, freinds, the media as well as others mediums.

its your choice to associate a certain behavior(negative or positive) to a race and treat them a certain way b/c of it, or not.

also, another thing fear IS natural, instinctual, like happiness or frustration....racism is not. you are right (as far as fear is diff. from racism)...thats why you are the aunt and hes the nephew....

edit for ms perfect, i think racism comes from fear....now as for the ?, where is the fear coming from...the fear is coming from prejudice.

Yes I agree with your nephew, and Buttercup said it exactly how I was thinking. Why would you feel any more fear if it were a Black or Hispanic guy than a White guy???. I mean if I were in a dark alley at 2 a.m. I'd be afraid of any guy no matter what race they were.

do not agree. won't be in a position to work out what's has to do with economics. Racism, what of it that does exist, is social. how a lot of human beings have been taught the previous "sticks and stones could destroy my bones, yet words will in no way injury me"? Racism is being synthetic in the U. S. perfect now. it style of feels that some human beings in the media shop screaming approximately it just to maintain it stirred up. how lots of you accessible have actual had a controversy with somebody over race?

No. There's a difference. Most people confuse predjudice with racism. Predjudice usually comes from knowledge of certain situations that you apply to most or all situations. Like a question I got about racism was: If you saw a group of Black men standing on the corner completely dressed in red, would you be afraid? My answer is HELL YES!!! I grew up in the city so red=Bloodz! It's not because they're Black. I'm Black. It's because I was brought up fearing gangs. So there is a difference in your case.

I agree with your nephew. If your fear of a stranger in the alley is based on race, that's racism. Don't see how it isn't.

It's not racism. There is a black girl where I work at the runs two redlights at a particular section of street where shady characters hang out. She run's the lights so as not to be in a vulnerable postion. All these shady characaters are black. Does that make her racists? No, she is black and alive I might add.

i think he is right. everybody has a degree of racism in them. if i was in a dark alley i would be scared of all of them, for different stereotypical reasons. if it is a small degree i dont think that is bad. i think it is just being socially cautious. im not racist i have had friends of all colors of the rainbow

your nephew is right if your fear is base in race then it is racism, I wouldn't feel different if the guys is black, Spanish, Asian or what ever.
