As my family started growing in size. i.e. Brothers getting older, Marriages-girl friends, kids, etc... My family unanimously decided on drawing names for the adults on Thanksgiving.

Anyone having a job and that could afford it is put into a bowl and randomly drawn. (You could not draw your own name or your significant others name). We set the limit at $100. This was much cheaper than say buying every adult a $25 gift. The other nice thing about it is we put suggestions on our name slip. We also kept secret who's name everyone has.

Then we buy all the kids (Whoever was not included in the drawing) a gift or two. A huge family Christmas is only about $350 vs. nearly $1000 before and everyone is happy.

We also like trying to figure out who has who's name. Then were surprised if we were wrong....

In my family we have been doing a white elephant exchange for the adults. There are a lot of variations, which you could probably find in an internet search, but basically everyone buys a gift that can be for anyone. We usually have a price limit of $40. We also exchange stocking stuffers. And, everyone gets presents for the little kids, because they really have the most fun on Christmas.

We give gifts to our nieces and nephews. The adult children and spouses do a gift exchange and we draw names. Everyone gives gifts to our parents. We draw names a little after thanksgiving.

A white elephant gift is a general gift for a guy or for a girl, not intended for someone specific.

We tend to do a gift exchange. I spend between $50 to $100 per person and only spend on the wife and my immediate family.

in our family we do it by age group..

kids under 16 draw names

and 17 and up draw names....that way the young adults and adults give gifts to each other

and the kids give gifts to kids around there age.

everyone gives gifts to the grandparents...

we have a big family and we usually do secret Santa and pull names out during Thanksgiving.

we do one per family as we have so many family and friends to buy for it gets sooooooooooo expensive but we always buy them something to share, like gift baskets or movies dvds or sometimes we get them a nice gift card to their favorite restaurant and make it special. i think that is good i dont like to draw names cause then it seems like u want to be cheap. sometimes we play dirty santa which means someone pulls a number and they get a gift and if u like what they got u take it and they get what u got it is fun and silly and everyone has a great time at it...

not drawing names, I love to give gifts to my family, I love the shopping and the fun of trying to find the perfect gift every year.

Everyone buys for everyone on my bf's side and my family just buys for our immediate family and grandparents etc. I think it is nice to get everyone a little something, but it adds up quickly, especially when we are at the age that the family is growing [wives/husbands/kids]. It makes it stressful and it shouldnt be.
