Is this really legal? The entire electrical system in my apartment is failing, if parts of it hasn't already. How many months do I have to live like this before the landlord has to fix it? I just keep paying this guy rent and no cooperation from his side with repairs.

*My previous question can clarify a few more things.

So what do I do?

Just to follow up with what she said. Call your local state bar office. Bar association for the attorneys. Usually once or twice a week, they will give you 30 minutes for free. New attorneys have to do this to gain their pro bono work. They will be eager to help and will set this up for free.

That way you wont need to pay an attorney to set it up.

Good Luck

Electrical problems could be serious. Contact the county/city housing inspector. Your landlord will get a list of deficiencies that he will have to repair or face fines.

You may want to put the repair request in writing to your landlord, explaining how long you have been waiting for this to be taken care of. And tell him you will be forced to contact the housing inspector if he doesn't take care of it right away.

However, if you do call the housing inspector, don't be surprised if your landlord gives you 30 day notice to move.

The best thing to do is to contact an attorney and let them know you'll be paying "rent on deposit." This means you'll pay your rent on time and in full, but you'll pay it to your local courthouse. Your landlord can't touch it until all repairs are done.
