I think you are partially right. We should have let Stalin and the Soviet Union and Communism become extinguished by the Nazis. This would have over-extended them and we could have mopped them up.
The main reason we were so hell-bent on helping the Soviet Union was because so many of the democrats then, just like now, were closet socialist/communists. You notice that their gusto for the atomic bomb suddenly subsided when Germany surrendered. Then, the closet communists in our midst suddenly got ethics and decided it would be okay to just let a million of our troops die invading Japan rather than use the "unethical" atomic bomb. They would have used it on Hitler and the Germans in an instant to same their precious communism.

The US and Britain needed the USSR to fight against the Nazis and the USSR needed the British and the Americans. FDR felt that he was better able to handle Stalin than Churchill and so he cultivated a friendship with Stalin. Churchill was always suspicious that FDR and Stalin would make deals after the war regarding who got which pieces of which countries in Europe and leave Britain out - which pretty much is what happened.
But in the days of WW2 all the nations opposed to the Nazis had to align themselves with each other to defeat them. And by the time the US came into the war the Japanese were on the move as well of course, which meant that the war had to be fought on many different fronts.
If the Russians were not bought into the alliance the outcome of the Second World War would have been very different.

You got your facts mixed up. Germany was on a rampage, and it's ranks were going to invade Russia. The Russians fought hard to keep the Hitler sweep, from invading Russia. At the same time, Germans were sweeping throughout Europe and the British and American Military , had no other options but to step in. It was Hitlers plan to take over the entire world. Stalin and Roosevelt, worked together to keep this Hitler Lunatic from invading many countries. Poland and Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Denmark, were also invaded by the Hitler Nazi's. But they were driven back, with the help of these Nations. Don't compare Russia and America with Hitler. He was the worse of the worse. Read your History Books.

FDR did not have a choice: Hitler would crush America like an eggshell.
Hitler was the pure Evil.
Stalin was just another monarch: no better, no worse than the British monarchs, who genocided the Indians and invented the concentration camps (Boer war).
Very familiar figure for FDR.
And by the way, one fact: GULag population in 1941 was almost TWICE less than in current American prisons.
---
No matter did FDR help with his 6% of material support by Lend Lease, or not, the Red Army would crush the Nazi Germany.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend...
FDR backed Stalin not because he liked or trusted him, but as a matter of mutual need. In fact FDR knew that Hitler and Stalin had started out as allies and in their first mutual endeavor carved up Poland between themselves through invasion in 1939. It was only after Hitler betrayed Stalin and attacked Russia that Stalin became our "friend". Neither FDR nor Churchill ever trusted Stalin, that's clear based on the history.
I do agree with you that both Stalin and Hitler were genocidal maniacs...

He didn't back Stalin! He shared a common enemy with Stalin.
Big difference. Stalin had Russian stuff and the Russian machines were worthless junk. Even today Avtovaz is a joke!
An American 10 year old could build a better car.
Germany wanted an industrialized conquest and genocide. Germany had real machines and engineers and soldiers. They were much more dangerous.
Stalin was an equal opportunity oppressor.
Plus, Germany declared war on us! They attacked us too! Your knowledge of history is flawed and stupid!

Really? Many people don't think that and Hitler was seen as the greater threat, he even invade Russia! It was only after that the Russia became an ally, to fight a common enemy. I agree that Stalin was evil and a stupid communist but FDR formed an alliance with him because it was the only way to win the war and to defeat Nazis who were killling Jews.

FDR formed an alliance with the Soviet Union because by opening up a two front invasion, they could beat the crap out of Hitler's army, his SS, and his airforce and tank corps.
Otherwise, it would've been a three-man fight and no one was prepared for that.
